On November 9, 2006 the 49ers surprised local politicians and fans alike with their astonishing news. The 49ers informed the public about failing the attempt to build a stadium and commercial residential development in Candlestick point which has been their home since 1971.
The attempt to build the stadium failed and fans and politicians alike seemed really surprised about the announcement.
Mayor Gavin Newsom is attempting resume talks with the owners of 49ers while another lawmaker informed that he would stop the team from using the name San Francisco if they leave the town.
The team had announced that they did not want to negotiate any further with the mayor and were contemplating a move to Santa Clara. However, John York, the owner went on to say the next day that he was willing to hear new ideas from the city but would continue discussions with Santa Clara city officials.
York has explained to the San Francisco officials that the present plan at Candlestick Point is not viable for the fans. However, the mayor requested an opportunity to explore other avenues and options.
Democratic Assemblyman Mark Leno is all set to introduce a bill that would ban professional sports organization from using San Francisco in their names if they not based in the city. An exception can be made if it is authorized by the mayor and board of supervisors. However, York has insisted that the team would not leave San Francisco Bay area and will not change its name.
